Content Writing…Who Knew?

Hey, everyone!  Wow, so I haven’t been able to update the blog in awhile because I have been so busy!  I think the last time I posted I mentioned that I had bid for some jobs on www.freelancer.com, and unfortunately, I still haven’t gotten a project on there but I also haven’t put much more effort into it, so it’s really my fault.  You know when you’re looking for a job or a way to make money, you have to go all in!  My mind has been all over the place and when I sit down at the computer to search for something, I jump from site to site and have found that I’m not being very effective with the little bit of time I do have.  So it’s time to get more organized!

So the reason I’ve been so busy is that one of my friends messaged me on Facebook after seeing my post and told me she is opening a hardwood flooring business and asked if I would write all the content for her new website!  I was pretty nervous at first because I know nothing bout hardwood floors (except that they look beautiful in a home), so I did a lot of research and wrote what I think was some pretty good stuff.  Check it out on the link above and let me know what you think!

Now this first project took me a very long time because I kept overthinking everything, so the money I made wasn’t a whole lot compared to the time it took me to complete it, but I think with some practice, this could be some very easy money for me.  I just need to find a lot of other people who need stuff written for their websites!

I did some research on search engine optimization (SEO) which is what every website needs if they want to show up in any search results, and found that one of the most important things is to make sure the content on the site is unique (not copied from anywhere else), is very relevant to the subject at hand, and is interesting and captivating to its audience.  I did some keyword research and found the terms that were searched for the most in that industry, and then made sure I included those keywords throughout the content in a natural way.  I broke up the content into smaller sections to make it easier for me to write, and made sure I put a title above each section with the most powerful keyword terms.  Apparently, the search engines check out page titles and content titles first when trying to gather the best sites to display to the searcher.  I also tried to educate the reader as much as possible instead of just trying to talk about how wonderful her business is because I read somewhere that was important to the search engines as well.

I’ve become very interested in the SEO field just after reading several articles about it, so I’ve made an effort to start focusing on this type of work for the time being.  I know I can’t compete with all of those SEO companies out there because I still am not very sure what I’m doing, but I can learn just like the rest of them did.  So in between finding other people who need content written for their websites, I’ll be researching and studying everything I can about search engine optimization and how the search engines work.  The internet is a very complicated and interesting beast, don’t ya think?

Gotta run…it’s late and I’m exhausted!

Take Action

Hey, everyone!  I just realized I haven’t made a post in quite awhile.  Sorry about that for all of you who sit on the edge of your seat waiting for me to post a blog every day!  Ha!  So we’ve been super busy with the holiday last weekend, working on getting the kids on the same sleeping and eating schedules, me trying to manage my time and work in between raising kids and running a household.  I know I talked about time management in another post, and just wanted to say that it is definitely a lot harder than it sounds!  I’ve gone for a couple of days at a time without taking a shower, I usually stay in my pajamas until 2 or 3 in the afternoon, and my house is a wreck right now, but I have been making some progress with the job hunt!

I signed up with www.freelancer.com which is a site where you can offer pretty much any type of service you want.  You create a profile describing your experience and your skills, and people post whatever type of services they are looking for.  You can then place a bid on the service, and they choose whichever one they like out of all of the bids.  I haven’t landed a job through them yet, but I’m not giving up.  I’m pretty sure your ratings and reviews from other clients play a big role in getting jobs, and since I don’t have any experience on this site, I don’t have any reviews or ratings yet.  I’m thinking I’m going to have to get some of my friends to post jobs and give me ratings just so I’ll be able to get some legitimate jobs.  That’s not too dishonest, is it?  I’m just trying to be creative here!

I’ve also put some posts on craigslist offering content writing services, tutoring services, and virtual assistant services.  I had one person reply to my post and got so excited, but was quickly let down when I realized it was a marketer trying to sell me something.  I just thought of this idea, and I’m surprised I haven’t thought of it sooner, but I’m going to post something on my Facebook wall telling all of my friends and family what I’m looking for.  You never know who will read it and maybe the perfect opportunity will pop up!

I feel so much pressure to start making money, but I need for whatever job I find to be a good fit for me and my family.  My husband doesn’t seem to mind that my search is taking so long, but it’s starting to drive me crazy!  I was first spending all of my time reading about jobs, so at least I’m taking action now and actively seeking employment through different channels.  I’ve definitely gotten a lot faster at using my computer, that’s for sure!

My body has started to adjust to getting less sleep, and although I’m tired during the day with the kids, my eyes aren’t closing involuntarily anymore, so that’s a good sign!  I’ve always been a hard worker, dedicated to whatever job I’m asked to do, and I’m working just as hard, if not harder, at finding a new opportunity.  Hopefully for all of you other moms out there in the same position, this post will let you know that you’re not alone.  Just stay positive and take action every day and it will eventually pay off!

Gotta run…the kiddos are hitting each other!
